Students part of a Lexington High School theater program has won “Best Play” honors for the 2020 Southeastern Theater Conference Convention. Which school? Has the school won this award before?
SCAPA theater students from Lafayette High School are the recipients of this high honor in their craft. They also won accolades for Overall Technical Excellence and Spirit of the Festival.
According to theater teacher, Amie Kisling, this is only the second time in 71 years that a Kentucky school has won “Best Play” and the first time a Fayette County School has won.
In individual honors, the judges’ All-Star cast include Kieshaun Butts, Daniel Baesler, and Catron Arnold from Lafayette, and Joseph Ntakarutimana and Gabe Francis from Tates Creek High School. The Tates Creek group, directed by teacher Daniel Ellis, also won for Best Ensemble.
The SCAPA students performed Failure: A Love Story by playwright Philip Dawkins. The Tates Creek ensemble performed James and the Giant Peach, based on the classic children’s book.
Each year, SETC welcomes around 5,000 actors, singers, dancers, designers, technicians, stage managers, directors, playwrights, teachers, students, and professionals for 3 days. During this time, participants get to experience workshops, keynotes, performance festivals, auditions, college recruiting, job interviews, and more.
The 2020 convention was held from February 26 until March 1 in Louisville, KY.
