A Lexington P.E. teacher has just been recognized statewide for her excellence in Physical Education. What is her name? What school does she teach at? What award is it exactly?
LaDonda Porter from Beaumont Middle School was recognized as the 2019 Southern District Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year. In late April, she will compete for the 2020 national honors at the Salt Lake City convention.
Porter has been at Beaumont for 13 years and has recently served as Vice President/P.E. of the Kentucky Society for Health and Physical Education (KYSHAPE). She is also a liasion for the state wellness program and promotes wellness activities at Beaumont including the school’s annual biometric screening.
For the 2018-2019 school year, Porter was awarded the Kentucky’s Middle School P.E. Teacher of the Year. She has also recently been awarded the Lyman T. Johnson Torch of Excellence award from the University of Kentucky’s College of Education.
When not in the classroom, Porter stays very busy. She serves as a trainer for the Where Everybody Belongs mentoring program, school athletic director, volleyball coach, and girls’ track and field coach. She also holds the role of Middle School Content Specialist for Fayette County Public Schools.
She earned her bachelor’s in Physical and Health Education from the University of Kentucky and her master’s in Library Science from Eastern Kentucky University.
