Anna Sullinger of Beaumont Middle School will receive the 2019 NATFACS Award of Merit from the National Association Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences.
She was Kentucky’s state nominee in July and then chosen as this year’s national award recipient. On December 6, Sullinger will be congratulated during the ACTE CareerTech Vision conference in Anaheim, California.
“The Family and Consumer Sciences motto is ‘Creating healthy and sustainable families.’ Students in FCS learn hands-on skills that they can use today and in the future – finance, food preparation, child/human development, sustainability, nutrition, and textile knowledge,” Sullinger said.
“Teaching students is a passion, not a business. If a teacher counts the hours of days or the money they spend, they will burn out quickly,” she added. “A good teacher needs to be a positive role model, practice what they preach, and remove the barriers that keep students from experiencing success. Good teachers also need to believe in their students and have high expectations that are achievable. I believe making an investment in the future of children will pay ten-fold. If we want to accomplish this, we must provide opportunities for students today so that we can help develop future leaders in our homes, families, schools, and communities tomorrow. Reporting to my classroom each day is a choice I make, not a duty I perform.”
Originally from Maysville, Sullinger earned a bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education from the University of Kentucky, a master’s in Secondary Education from Eastern Kentucky University, and her Rank I in Career and Technical Education from UK. She joined Fayette County Public Schools in January 2015 after teaching more than eight years at the Grant County Career and Technology Center.
